Copper wire has several important properties that make it a “natural” for electrical wiring. More than any other non-precious metal, it is the best conductor of electricity, packing more power into a given diameter of wire than any substitute material. Copper wire is also easier to bend. With copper wire, connections are easy and sure. And, because it has a high melting point, it can take surprisingly heavy overloads or current surges without damage or danger.
1.50 micro-inch (1.27 micron) nickel-plated copper wire is used to make insulated wire for operating temperatures up to 260ºC.
2.ASTM B 355 specifies a 50 micro-inch (1.27 micron) plated continuous nickel thickness.
3.For severe high temperature applications, the operating temperature can be increased from 260ºC to 1100ºC with an increase in nickel plating thickness from 2% to 27% by weight.
4.For crimp connections in high temperature resistant cables, nickel-plated copper wire is preferred over silver-plated copper wire due to cost effectiveness.
5.Nickel-plated copper wire will have very little atmospheric effect on silver-plated and tin-plated copper wire. It has better resistance to corrosive atmospheres.
6.Nickel-plated copper wire is used for high-temperature operation, which would otherwise cause silver-plated copper wire to lose its luster.
7.Nickel-plated copper wire is harder than silver-plated and tin-plated copper wire.
