303 stainless steel coil
Type 303 stainless steel is an alloy that is the easiest austenitic stainless steel to work with today.
Characteristics
The excellent machinability is due to the presence of sulfur in the material composition, although improved machinability comes at a cost - the sulfur content results in reduced corrosion resistance and a slight reduction in toughness. However, as with most austenitic grades, the toughness remains excellent. The alloy is less weldable. 303 type can be used in a variety of engineering applications.
Suitability
The material is an austenitic steel grade that offers better machinability but reduced formability. This material is not recommended for applications requiring welding. Compared to 1.4301, Type 303 has lower corrosion resistance.
Typical Applications
Commercial applications for this engineered material include
- Aircraft parts
- Gears
- Nuts and bolts
- Electrical switchgear components
- Bushings
- Shafts
