Alloys 309 and 309S are austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel steels that will be commonly used for much higher temperature applications. Because of their higher chromium and also nickel content, Alloys 309 and also 309S are high rust resistant, have excellent resistance to oxidation, and also outstanding heat resistance when offering good energy at room and increased temperature ranges. The only major difference between 309 with 309S is the carbon content. Alloy 309S have a very much less carbon components which decreases carbide precipitation and also enhances weldability.
Due to their high chromium and nickel content, Alloys 309 and 309S are highly corrosion resistant, have outstanding resistance to oxidation, and excellent heat resistance while providing good strength at room and elevated temperatures.Since it contains 19% chromium, this alloy offers great protection against oxidizing agents like nitric acid or sulfuric acid, which can cause pitting or crevice corrosion over time if not protected properly against them. Additionally, it also offers good protection against general corrosion caused by exposure to saline solutions or seawater due to its nickel content which helps prevent attack by chlorides or bromides in seawater environments.
