Type 304/304L stainless steel, sometimes referred to as 18-8, combines excellent resistance to many corrosive environments with mechanical properties similar to most structural steels. It is nonmagnetic in the annealed state and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Its strength can be increased by cold working. When welding is required, Type 304/304L or a low carbon version of 304/304L (.03 max) should be used.
For Type 304 SS alloys, the annealing tem- peratures employed are between 1,100 and 1,150" C. Scale is formed during each of the anneals and is subsequently removed by pickling in a mixture of nitric and hydrofluoric acids.
